klopp Drops Coutinho For Man City Clash

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has left out playmaker Philippe Coutinho for the English Premier League clash against Manchester City on Saturday.

Liverpool will travel to the Etihad for an early kick off.

After the international break, Coutinho trained with Liverpool on return on Thursday and expectations were high that he will return to first team duties.

But Klopp said he wants to give Coutinho more time to train before playing competitive game and the player has agreed.

"I decided to leave him out of the squad for City so we can use the time for extra training. He agreed."

"We have got all the numbers [on Coutinho] from the Brazilian FA - the training, the intensity of the training, stuff like that, and it was all OK. And he played twice - I think about 15 or 20 minutes," said Klopp.

Coutinho played as a substitute in Brazil’s last two World Cup qualifier, but Klopp believes there is sense in leaving him behind, possibly for the UEFA Champions League.

"He agreed completely, so it was not as if he said: 'No, I don't need training, I want to play.' It was a good conversation."
