The Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, the American Green Card and the Irreverent Nigerians.
Nigerians would not cease to amaze (and especially, fill me with a sense of disgust).
We do not revere our heroes-people that earn respect for Nigeria and make the rest of the world not see us as worthless.
Giving knocks to T. B. Joshua of the synagogue is a welcome development; he wanted to play God!
But Soyinka's pledge concerning his American Green card...Nigerians, especially the youth, do not relish anything but materialism. Make money (by any means however); buy the latest car; build mansions for yourself and enjoy life generally-in the process oppress your colleagues and neighbors!
Professor Wole Soyinka's pledge, to me, should be looked at from the context of its symbolism: that America, as the bastion of democracy, should know better than elect a person of Trump temperament and psyche as her president! And I felt same way too. But Nigerians in their myopic world see not all this; what they are seeing is GREEN CARD and free-visa to America! As if American Green card is ticket to Paradise (in heaven)!
But Soyinka, at his age and with all his exploit on earth, has seen all and tasted all-what is he gonna lose without American Green card? I even believe the Americans (especially their literary world) shall be the losers here.
At worst, it is only the students at Oxford university where he gave a lecture and where he made the pledge concerning Trump and his Green card, that I expect should have the right to ask him to fulfill his pledge; not the irreverence Nigerians!
